I also can reproduce this error, I don't do anything special. source  
checkouts
of the rabbitmq-erlang-client and rabbitmq-server with rabbitmq-codegen.

All at their tip, when I try to connect with rabbitmq-erlang-client I  
get the
error above.

FWIW this doesn't happen in:

changeset:   727:89756e9329f4

as opposed to rabbitmq-server tip:
810:6d6dbd7f9b50

I also went on and did some bisect search on the changesets and found  
out
that the problem starts appearing on changeset 780. changeset 779 is  
perfectly
fine.
