In order to *build* rabbitmq, rather than just running it, your system 
needs to satisfy the following dependencies (taken from the debian 
control file):

cdbs, debhelper (>= 5), erlang-base | erlang-base-hipe, erlang-nox, 
erlang-dev, erlang-src, make, python

(I am assuming this was meant to read "install rabbitmq-server")

That's strange. Is there anything in the log files under /var/log/rabbitmq?
