You do need at least one disk node but performance characteristics of a cluster are highly workload-dependent. If you don't create and remove queues aggressively, disk nodes probably will have the
same performance as RAM nodes (given comparable hardware and OS configuration).

Are you sure the nodes were clustered? Can you provide a script (or several) that I can use to
reproduce your issue?
