[rabbitmq-discuss] Clustering Questions

I've read the guide at http://www.rabbitmq.com/clustering.html several times and am confused as to how each NODE knows what IP/DNS the other machines are?
Should I define them in the hosts file?

Referencing the example :

[{rabbit,
  [{cluster_nodes, {['rabbit at rabbit1', 'rabbit at rabbit2', 'rabbit at rabbit3'], disc}}]}].

how do the machines know where rabbit1, rabbit2, rabbit3 are?
