This page has compatibility information for the Java client and shows 
that both v2.7.1 and v2.8.7 will work with a 0-9-1 broker:

I would recommend using the latest version. v2.7.1 is almost a year old 
and many bugs have been fixed since. You can find the changes by looking 
at the "java client" section of the release notes linked from the changelog:
http://www.rabbitmq.com/changelog.html
