I have filed a bug report with the Erlang folks - see 
http://erlang.org/pipermail/erlang-bugs/2012-August/002980.html.

I am pretty sure that process crash is harmless in the sense that it 
happens in a code path where the connection is being torn down anyway, 
ostensibly due to there being no certificate.
