As Matthew asked, what makes you think it *hangs* rather than just 
taking a long time?

Argh, if it *really* hangs that would have been the data we need to 
reproduce the problem :(

Yes, that's in the logs. Look for entries involving 
'vm_memory_high_watermark'.
