I can't answer that question I'm afraid but it's worth pointing out (in 
case Scott is reading :-) that RabbitMQ 2.3.1 now has a plugin mechanism 
in the server to make these sorts of plugins more feasible to write (the 
previous release required patching the server I think).

Having an official plugin which externalises authentication would be 
nice but it's down our priority list ATM.
