ok. It's still worth performing some of the checks suggested in the

1) does 'erl -sname foo' work?
if not
2) can you start the erlang port mapper daemon (empd) manually?
if not
3) do you have anything listening on port 4369?
if not
4) can you start the erlang port mapper daemon on a different port (epmd 
-port 4368, say)?
