<br></div><div>That said the bridges I am talking about are from very small gateway devices on very unreliable wireless networks connected up to 400 ms away from the central brokers. From what I have observed in the past MQTT is designed to work more effectively in these sorts of scenarios. </div>

As you say, bridging is not part of the specification. You can use<br>
RabbitMQ federation to obtain equivalent benefits, but using AMQP as the<br>
federation protocol.<br>
