[rabbitmq-discuss] Cluster not running - getting Error: {cannot_discover_cluster, "The nodes provided are either offline or not running" error

if you can resolve the hostnames from node1<-->node2
and you can telnet between the two nodes to port 4369
then perhaps you forgot to set the erlang_cookie to the same value on both 
nodes
