In the end I have replicated this using another server certificate. 
There's a somewhat unusual type OID (0.9.2342.19200300.100.1.1) in the 
cert whose value is not getting decoded properly. I'll chase with the 
Erlang folks, and the next version of RabbitMQ to be released will 
contain a workaround.
