You can pull the one we use for RPM / debs from:

http://hg.rabbitmq.com/rabbitmq-server/file/7cefef84b261/packaging/common/rabbitmq-server.init

When you say "The script associated with the previous version no longer 
works", is that where you got it from?

Note that there's a change in the generic unix tarball in 2.8.0: it now 
locates logs, config, the database and so on within the unpacked 
tarball, keeping it all in one place and meaning you don't have to mess 
with permissions to get it working.
