Also: both the default_user / default_pass and cluster_nodes config 
items are only read when starting from a completely blank setup - i.e. 
after a fresh installation or rabbitmqctl reset. But the cluster nodes 
one will persist. So if the OP set cluster_nodes first, then set 
default_user / default_pass and restarted, it would not do anything.
