1) Damn.

2) epmd should be left behind - it's shared by all Erlang apps on the 
system, it's not owned solely by RabbitMQ. But having an extra process 
around will not cause shutdown to hang.

/var/log/rabbitmq/shutdown_log
/var/log/rabbitmq/shutdown_err

might have interesting things in them.
