If there's any way you could provide a tcpdump / wireshark output when 
this happens, I reckon that would be very helpful (I think the one from 
the client side is more interesting, but having both sides would be better).

Also check that the script really terminates the JVM and that it is not 
somehow stuck, when this happens. Though I doubt that could be the problem.
