I have erlang vR11B-2.3.el5
This is how I installed it:
# su -c 'rpm -Uvh http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release-5-3.noarch.rpm'
# yum install erlang
It appears it was installed from EPEL.
# yum info erlang

I installed the rpm on Centos 5.2 (note the warning):
# rpm -i ./rabbitmq-server-1.7.2-1.i386.rpm
warning: ./rabbitmq-server-1.7.2-1.i386.rpm: Header V4 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 056e8e56
I then started rabbitmq-server:
# /etc/init.d/rabbitmq-server start
Starting rabbitmq-server: FAILED - check /var/log/rabbitmq/startup_log, _err
rabbitmq-server.
startup_log contents:
{"init terminating in do_boot",{{nocatch,{error,{cannot_start_application,rabbit,{bad_return,{{rabbit,start,[normal,[]]},{'EXIT',{undef,[{base64,encode_to_string,[<<16 bytes>>]},{rabbit,print_banner,0},{rabbit,start,2},{application_master,start_it_old,4}]}}}}}}},[{init,start_it,1},{init,start_em,1}]}}
This suggests you have an old version of erlang (prior to R11B5, which
is the earliest 1.7.2 supports). How did you install erlang, and
which version is it? Could you try with erlang installed from EPEL?
